Kitchen Day Two

Written by Andrew on October 28th, 2009

With a day interrupted by newspaper articles and a time out while a friend trimmed our donkey Lucy’s feet, progress was slower than hoped for. The good news is that, spurred on from yesterday’s demo, we got started at removing the ceiling to see what the beams look like.

They didn’t skimp on the nails at all. The headlight may look a trifle geeky, but it works like a charm. (BTW, it’s stardard farm wear for me working outside in the winter, and lasts several weeks on a set of recharable AAA’a). Susan was very excited to see the beams start to appear.

We figured this would be more exciting than finishing clearing out the space to make it easier to work. Maybe true, but with things looking so interesting I kept going and got about a quarter of the ceiling down. Enough to get a sense of what it could look like.

After this was some less exciting tidying up, and converting some of the demo wood into sizes that will go into the wood stove. Not quite “Burning Down the House”, but at least converting waste into heat. We’re creating fuel faster than we can burn it. We’ll be back at it tomorrow.

Boy you guys have really got a project ahead of you. What you’ve got done looks really interesting… you’ve done a good job, plus it’s created a lot of firewood for heat. Good for you. Bonnie

An old house has a lot of charm once you get down to it. Good job Susan and Andy. Remove one nail today and one more tomorrow and first thing you know you are all done.

    Very cool. Sorry to have missed the demolition. I’m a bit of a crowbar specialist. ;o{)}

Is this going to be a public kitchen or just for the family?

    Hey Dennis,

Thanks for the comments. This is our family kitchen. Plan when done is to be able to fit in space for big table for family events, plus lots of cooking space (e.g. 2 stoves, 3 with wood-stove).

BTW, there’s lots more demolition still to go (so you need to be careful what you say ;-). It seems to take a lot longer than you’d think. More coming down today.

    cheers, Andrew

Keep up the great job that everyone is involved with. Andy, have you done any computer projections as to what it will look like when you are done?

    Hi Fred,
the only future projections are the ones using the computer between our ears. We have a general plan that will/has evolve as we find out what we really have. For instance, we’re going to cover more of the brick. Current plan is to paint the ceiling and beams white. Will keep the charm, but add light. The open ceiling is great, makes the room seem higher, but is a bit dark. Floorboards were re-used from something so there’s paint and stuff on the underneath of some. Beams are rough sawn spruce (I think).
Based on the work so far we’re figuring it’ll turn out real nice.

    cheers,
    Andrew

Brown beams and white in between, It will give that rusty look and charm of and old timber frame house.
